What Banned Book Are You?

You got: Lolita

The censors missed the point entirely when they banned Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, a book that gets inside the mind of a sick man and the obsession that ruins his life. Like Nabokov, you know that we can only deal with danger by being brave, and not hiding from it. Your courage will serve you well.

You got: Animal Farm

Too anti-Soviet, too anti-authoritarian, too pro-animal rights. George Orwell’s Animal Farm has been banned for a host of reasons. People fear Orwell, for the same reason they fear you, because neither of you believe in following leaders blindly into disaster. Stay true to yourself!

You got: Catch-22

Banned for its use of obscene language and anti-authoritarian attitudes, Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 is one of the greatest anti-war books of all time. Like Heller, a World War II veteran, it’s clear to you that war is crazy, and you can’t be afraid of offending people if you care about the truth.

You got: Madame Bovary

Gustave Flaubert was prosecuted for his most famous work, Madame Bovary, for “offenses against public morals.” His views mirror your rejection of society’s traditional gender roles, and your belief in the individual’s right to make his or her own decisions.

You got: Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn

Banned for its unflinching depiction of America’s racial inequities, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn made people uncomfortable by refusing to sugarcoat the truth. Just as Twain refused to deny the painful reality he witnessed, you are compelled to stand up and speak for people who aren’t being listened to.

You got: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, which is set in a mental institution, has been banned frequently for its language and for its depictions of violence and torture. Like Kesey, you know that there are hard truths in life, and the only way to fix problems is to expose them. Stay brave!

You got: To Kill A Mockingbird

Condemned as a “filthy, trashy novel” that “conflicted with the values of the community,” To Kill a Mockingbird shows us that we cannot ignore the troubling aspects of life, but we can rise above them. You’ve learned that honesty is the only way to deal with fear. The truth will set you free.

You got: Fifty Shades Of Grey

Fifty Shades Of Grey, the best seller by E.L. James, has been banned for its explicit depiction of a transgressive relationship. You support the individual’s right to live and celebrate any lifestyle they choose.

You got: The Catcher In The Rye

One of the most misunderstood books of all time, J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher In The Rye was called vulgar, blasphemous, immoral, and anti-authoritarian. Like Salinger, you know that when searching for the truth, you have to ignore the critics and find your own truth.
